The Weight Test: Using a Precision Scale
Genuine cards fall within a narrow weight range; a card well outside it is worth a closer look.

What this checks
The mass of the card, which reflects the specific paper stock and coatings used by the official manufacturer.

Genuine looks like
Most modern genuine cards weigh roughly 1.7–1.8 g, depending on finish and condition.
Fake looks like
A weight clearly outside the genuine range — often heavier or lighter due to different stock.
Step by step
- 1Zero a precision scale that reads to 0.01 g.
- 2Weigh several cards you know are genuine to establish your reference range.
- 3Weigh the suspect card under the same conditions.
- 4Compare against your reference range.
- 5Flag a card that sits well outside the range for further testing.
Why it matters
Objective and repeatable, but weight overlaps between genuine and good fakes, so it is a supporting test, not a verdict.
